Quick Tips: Removing Clutter From Your Home / Estate
- Bring home three big boxes from the grocery store or package store. Mark each box: one to “Keep”, one to “Sell”, one to “Donate”. For bigger items like kitchen furniture, couches, pullout sofas, and love seats, place a labeled sticky note on it. All of the other things that you don’t want to keep, sell, or donate, throw in a garbage can or place a labeled sticky note on it that says something like “Call Clark County Junk Removal to come and relieve me of this stress”.
- Attack one room in your house at a time. If you don’t have you big boxes for every room in the house, put the items in the separate piles on the floor. This is a good technique because you’ll likely end up switching items from pile to pile as you work your way through your home.
- Rule of thumb: If you haven’t used an item in a year or more, it goes in the sell or charity pile! Double goes for old furniture that you may have in the family room that no one uses or you may even still have the plastic wrap on your couch. That might be something you want to donate!
- Try the closet hanger experiment. This is a great way to identify what clothes you do and don’t wear. Start by aligning your clothes in the closet all in the same direction and after you wear an item, turn the hanger in the opposite direction. After a while you’ll begin to see what clothes you no longer wear or use often enough to keep around. Take your excess clothing and bring it to a legitimate charitable organization like The Goodwill or The Laurel House to give it a second life. This closet experiment could also be applied to a number of clutter areas in your home like: cleaners, toys, linens, tools, hobbies and craft items.
- Hire a home-stager to take a look. A home-stager will provide you with the perspective of potential clients and explain how he/she would clear your space to put it up on the market for sale. You might not follow all of the advice, but it will help you to see what others see and in turn, point you in the right direction.
